Upgrade Your Coffee

There’s no denying that a good cup of coffee is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Coffee also has a lot of health benefits when consumed in moderation. The taxing effects that too much caffeine consumption can have on our bodies however, are very real.

Caffeine stimulates the body's fight or flight response, causing the production of cortisol, the stress hormone. Too much cortisol production can disrupt the production of other feel good hormones in the body and can lead to adrenal burnout. If you’re feeling jittery after a cup or two, are prone to anxiety or nervousness, or having trouble falling asleep, it may be a sign to either cut back or upgrade your coffee in a way that feels better to your body.

I absolutely love coffee, and used to drink it religiously throughout the day. While it tasted delicious, it left me feeling burnt out, jittery, and with an upset stomach. I have a couple amazing ways I have started upgrading my morning cup to leave me feeling calm, alive, and energized without sacrificing the delicious experience of coffee.

Sneak in some Shrooms

Your morning cup is the perfect place to sneak in some herbs, adaptogens and mushrooms to stave off stress and help keep you alert all day without the crash. I always either enhance or replace my morning coffee with an adaptogenic blend of some sort. They mimic the rich flavor of coffee and make a really lovely tasting addition or replacement. Here are some of my favorite products I use to upgrade my morning coffee.

Rasa

My all time favorite. You brew this stuff like coffee, and it tastes like coffee, but isn’t. It’s actually a blend of herbs and adaptogenic mushrooms that help you feel energized yet calm. You can use Rasa to entirely replace coffee, or to enhance your morning brew.

I like to have a morning bev: one part rasa, one part coffee. I add a little plant based milk and about one tsp maple syrup, and you have a delicious, energizing morning drink that gives you all the coffee deliciousness without the jitters and crash.

Mud WTR

A blend of spices, adaptogenic mushrooms and cacao that tastes more like a sibling to coffee than the real thing, but is delicious nonetheless. You simply mix a tablespoon of the already made blend into hot water, add your plant based milk, sweeten to taste, and you’re good to go. Sometimes I’ll add this to my coffee as well. I’ll brew a little less coffee and add about ½-¾ tbsp and some extra hot water to give my coffee a boost.

Moon Juice Spirit Dust

For a coffee upgrade, or a shroomy, earthy latte that doesn’t really taste like coffee but is delicious in her own way, Spirit Dust is it. Moon Juice is a favorite of mine, and this stuff is a serious mood booster. I like to enjoy spirit dust in addition to my coffee. I add a little bit of freshly brewed or instant coffee to some hot water, a tablespoon of spirit dust, and some plant based milk and blend it together for a delicious cup of bliss.

Four Sigmatic

This stuff is simple, easy, and so delicious. It consists of instant coffee with ground mushrooms like lions mane and cordyceps that improve focus and energy. Simply add to water, add any milk if you like, and sweeten to taste!

Add Fat

Adding fat to your coffee helps your system metabolize the caffeine better and can reduce jitters and weakness. I simply add some coconut or MCT oil to my coffee and blend or whisk it in. If dairy works for you, you can also add some ghee or grass fed butter. Add it to your mushroom packed coffee for an upgraded creamy, bulletproof latte that leaves you full, energized, and blissed out.
